AGAPE Project

AGAPE Project

Kicukiro District, Niboyi Sector, Kigali, Rwanda

AGAPE’s 300 children come from homes on the southwestern outskirts of Kigali, Rwanda’s capital.  Most have lost parents to genocide and AIDS.  Others are living with infected parents or other adults who may or may not be related. 8 % of the children are themselves HIV+.

The AGAPE children learn to seek peace over violence and to learn from and understand one another.  The children gather each Sunday afternoon at the former home of AGAPE founders, Donatile Uwera, her daughter, Alice Uwera, and Anna Marie for fun, games, songs, and to learn Bible stories.

CHABHA has been supporting AGAPE since 2005.  The funds provide health insurance for all the children, school costs for primary and for secondary school for many, playground equipment, and home visiting. These children are deeply impoverished, and we are working to provide extra support for clothing, shoes, and emergency food.

When we were visiting in April, 2008, a paper proposal was handed to Donatile written by a group of 10 to 12-year-old boys who were a “corporation”.  They were seeking money to build pens, rabbits, and rabbit food for an independent enterprise.
